Have You Ever Really Smelled a Leaf?
When we look at a plant,
we usually notice its colour,
shape, or size.
But move a little closer.
Gently rub a leaf between your fingers,
and you may discover something:
plants have their own scents.
And different plants can smell remarkably different.
Where Does Plant Scent Come From?
Plants do not produce these scents simply to smell pleasant.
Many plants naturally produce volatile compounds —
substances that can easily move into the air.
That is part of why we can detect the characteristic scent of a plant.
Some smell fresh.
Some feel green and herbal.
Others may carry woody,
fruity,
or spicy notes.
That is also why different forests can have completely different smells.
Even One Mountain Can Have Many Scents
A single mountain may contain many different plants.
Each one experiences different amounts of sunlight,
temperature,
humidity,
soil conditions,
and exposure to wind.
As a result,
their natural aromas can differ too.
Some grow under stronger sunlight.
Others live beneath shade.
Some grow near moist soil.
Others face stronger airflow.
Plants are constantly responding
to the environments around them.

Nanzhu Leaves Have Their Own Scent Too
Nanzhu leaves are no different.
When you take the time to experience them,
you may notice that they are not simply odourless green leaves.
They carry a distinctive botanical character.
And that aroma does not come from added fragrance.
It is part of the natural character of the leaf itself.
Because of this,
Nanzhu leaves from different seasons,
growing conditions,
and harvest batches may naturally show subtle differences in aroma and flavour.
Why Can Each Batch of Wufan Botanical Infusion Tea Be Slightly Different?
This is simply part of working with a natural botanical.
Our Wufan Botanical Infusion Tea uses Nanzhu leaves
harvested across spring, summer, and autumn,
with spring leaves being an important part of our quality selection.
Leaves from different seasons
naturally have different characteristics.
After going through the tea-making process,
they come together to create the final cup.
We carefully balance the seasonal leaves
and production process to keep the overall flavour as consistent as possible.
But we do not expect every batch to be completely identical.
Because plants come from nature.
Nature can be understood,
but it cannot be perfectly duplicated.
And That Is What Makes Plants Interesting
If every leaf had exactly
the same scent,
the same colour,
and the same flavour,
perhaps plants would lose one of their most fascinating qualities.
Real plants change subtly with the seasons,
their environment,
and their stage of growth.
Those small differences are also part of what makes them natural.
Nan Zhu Insight
At Nan Zhu,
we do not try to turn nature
into something completely identical.
We prefer to understand its variations
and work with them to create balance in every cup.
So the next time you smell a cup of Wufan Botanical Infusion Tea,
take a moment.
What you are sensing
may not simply be “tea aroma”.
It may also carry traces of the plant,
the season,
and the journey of a leaf.
Take a Moment
The next time you pass a tree,
don't rush past it.
Choose a leaf.
Bring it a little closer.
Take a breath.
And think:
If plants have their own way of communicating,
perhaps scent is one of their languages.
